Neighbourhood of the Land of Mragowo - Former Old Believers' monastery and Orthodox church in WojnowoNeighbourhood |
|
Wojnowo - the central settlement of Old Believers in former Prussia; since 1984 a theocratic commune. The convent in Wojnowo is open to the public. One of the greatest attractions is the interior of the molenna with a beautiful 19th-century altar (reffered to as ikonostas), the icon of the Holy Trinity in the centre, and a couple of other icons on both sides. Some icons, oryginally placed in the altar, have been stolen. The most precious icons from Wojnowo were transported to Olsztyn, where they can be admired in the Museum of Warmia and Mazury. What instantly draws tourists' attention is the magnificent chandelier (1910) with 32 candles, founded by a widower who wanted to commemorate his beloved wife (32 is a symbolic number - the wife of the founder of the chandelier was 32 when she died). In the entrance hall you will see an exhibition of photos and cards presenting the history and inhabitants of the convent. Near the convent there is a cemetery of Old Believers and a graveston of the family of Ludwikowscy. In Wojnowo you can also see the wooden Orthodox church, built by Awajew, an Orthodox priest, in 1922 and a red-brick molenna, built in 1921.
