Popielno is situated on the peninsula among the lakes Sniardwy, Beldany and Warnolty. This is where the Polish Academy of Sciences has created an experimental centre of animal breeding. It is mainly famous for the Polish Little horse, old breeds of farm animals, the cross between the wisent and the domestic cow and the European beaver. Thanks to the research station, the region of Varmia and Masuria prides itself on the biggest population of the beaver, the species which was totally exterminated here at the end of the 18th century. Many of these rodents from Popielno now live in the wild. Others can still be admired in the research station or at the impressive photo exhibition.

In 1956 the Polish Academy of Sciences came into possession of the forest around Popielno. A 1,600 ha area of the forest was enclosed and turned into the Polish little horse territory. At present two herds of Polish little horses live in the wild, successfully coping without any human intervention.

Every year Popielno is visited by 6,000 tourists. Apart from the station visitors are attracted by the museum which presents the heritage, achievements and the present projects of researchers from Popielno. The most impressive exhibits include the collection of Masurian deer antlers.  Polish little horses can be admired in the stable and in the paddock. The photo exhibition displays herds of Polish little horses living in the wild and provides information about wild horses' habits and way of life. One section of the museum is devoted to the local forest vegetation. There are two educational trails in Popielno. One of them runs along the picturesque eastern bank of the lake and presents information about forestry management. The other one contains information boards which explain the process of overgrowing and disappearance of the forest dystrophic lake.
