Piecki Commune

Worth to know

It is located in the south-eastern part of Warminsko-Mazurskie region, about 11 km from Mragowo. Over 50 % of the commune's surface is forest, 10 % is waters. The Krutynia River flows across Piecki commune, the waterway is about 105 km long. The Krutynia waterway starts in Sorkwity, goes through many lakes connected by streams and the river, and ends in Beldany Lake. The middle part of the waterway goes across the commune. You can stay in some hostels in Bienki, Zgon, Krutynia, Nowy Most.

The rich ground cover of the forest provides perfect conditions for many mushroom kinds, and the same is a paradise for keen mushroom pickers.

There are Bank Spoldzielczy, the healthcare facility, the primary school (there are also some in the commune) and the middle school in Piecki. They built the sewage facility and the sewage system is 90 % ready. The commune road system consists of some general and regional ones. That enables visitors to travel easily from Warsaw or Olsztyn.

History

The commune is located in the ancient Galindian teritory. The area was captured by some settlers from Mazowsze in the 13th century. They were the ancestors of Mazury people.
The foundation of the commune seat, Piecki (Peitschendorf), was due to the Teutonic Knights' Order Commander Urlich von Jungingen, later the Grand Master of the order. He gave Piecio of Muszaki the land near Medalbern Lake, i.e. Nydajno Lake, these days a meadow. The village name comes from Piecek or Piecio, that is Peter. In between 16th and 18th centuries, some 500 peasants lived in Piecki.  The village changed its character after the railway was built there (that of Czerwonka – Ruciane). After the World War I, there were 3 sawmills, a dairy, some mills and a bank.

Just before the World War II, 1.6 thousand people lived in Piecki. The war thoroughly devastated Piecki.

Not far from Piecki, there is the Museum of the Mazury Landscape Park in Krutyn, where you can be shown the typical animals of the area. The collection consists of almost 200 exhibits and is progressively growing. The majority of the exhibits are predacious birds, genus Corvus, or water birds. The animals-exhibits are some accidents victims. A flora exhibition is being prepared at present. The park wildlife is also displayed in the nature photography by Waldemar Bzura and during the slide presentations and some lectures as well.
