ALONG THE KRUTYNIA RIVER

The Krutynia waterway is considered one of the most beautiful low-land waterways of Europe. It is varied much, as it flows through Puszcza Piska forest and the Mazury Landscape Park (Mokre Lake). The length of the waterway is 102 km, of which 60 km is for still waters. There are interesting fauna and flora. It is often possible to observe eagles. Pay your attention to the sponge and the red water weed, grouped in red stains on river stones. The banks and shores are often with great oak and high pine trees. The waterway goes through a dozen or so lakes linked with short streams, commonly called the Krutynia River.

Along the whole route there are plenty of places to camp and many interesting things to see. From a canoe you can see picturesque, wooden houses. You can paddle near the fields of nenuphars on the lakes. You can also visit some reserves such as the one of the heron, the pine and floating islands. The Park of Wildlife in Kadzidlowo has a great presentation of local wild animals, for example wolves. Whereas in Wojnowo, there is a small exhibition of icons in the Old-Orthodox nunnery. After the village of Iznota you may find the exceptional hotel, Galindia, whose owner is called the last King of Galindia.

The depth of the Krutynia is 65 cm on average, the bed is with water weeds and water lilies, the banks are sandy. The Krutynia is rich in all kinds of fish and lobsters, so it is a good place of relaxation for anglers and those doing water sports as canoeing. In the village of Krutyn, there goes a shady alley along the river bank. For about 500 m in all directions from the village, there are forests with the oak predominatly. Thanks to its location Krutyn is a vacation site. In that way the village was described in the school chronicle. It was in 1957. Krutyn has saved its old building structure, consisting of wooden houses, however sometimes asymmetrically located. The buildings, not high, often with porches and window shutters are next to or in front of streets. There is the post office in an old barn from the late 19th century.
